Liz Conforti (con-four-tee) IS confronting the change.
Hot flashes seem to come from the chest area and then rise up towards my head. It just feels like in a flash, I'm beet red but I'm not beet red.
Liz is in the early phase of menopause…called pre or peri-menopause.
In perimenopause, your periods become more irregular and you can get some hot flashes and you might have periods every month for a little while and then you may go six months and you may get some hot flashes and then your periods could come back for a month or two and your hormones are kind of all over the place.
The actual age of menopause is all over the place, too.
Most people it's from 45 to 55 that is when the menopause transition occurs. So the time when your period starts becoming irregular and you get the hot flashes and eventually your periods stop.
Menopause is a transition that takes time. Some ride it out, while others opt for treatment. Your doctor can assess if prescription hormones are right for you to treat symptoms. Antidepressants can help with hot flashes and mood swings. Acupuncture has proven to take the heat out of hot flashes. While simple behavioral things---like dressing in layers and getting good exercise can help, too …all things considered, there is a finish line.
One year after your last menstrual period you're officially menopausal and then you're in menopause basically the rest of your life.
Liz isn't there yet, but she's working with her doctor on a team approach to this natural part of life. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
