Ann Erny had severe endometriosis and needed a hysterectomy, but she didn't want to miss work.
For me, to be off for six weeks would be an incredible load for my co-worker.
So her doctor cut her recovery time in half by performing the procedure through a laparoscope.
There are a lot of new tools that have been, you know, available now that allow you to do the hysterectomies through small incisions.
A standard abdominal hysterectomy requires a four to eight inch incision. The laparoscope needs only one-quarter to one-half inch openings so recovery is quicker, less painful and leaves less scarring.
Let me take a quick look at the incision. Ah, I can barely see them.
Even a large uterus can be removed through the slender fiber-optic tube.
We will morselate, meaning we'll take out the uterus in pieces through the specialized machine.
Vaginal hysterectomy is a popular surgical option, but the procedure is not for everyone.
Either the patients have never had a child before and the cervix are very deep and difficult for you to have a good exposure. Or a patient have very narrow pubic bone where you're not able to provide a good exposure.
For Ann, the decision to have laparoscopy was all in the timing.
I wanted to have as shorter a recuperation time as possible.
She was back on the job three and a half weeks after her surgery. For WebMD, I'm Sandee LaMotte.
