Tom and Margie Hodgin (HOJJ inn) vowed to stick together in good times and in bad. But neither imagined the strain anorexia would put on their marriage.
It becomes your life and takes over and causes you to do things… become somebody that you really, you're not originally.
I didn't know how to help her. I became, at some points, I became angry,…sad, hopeless, feelings of hopelessness.
Treating anorexia requires treating the couple. So the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill created U-Can (you can) uniting couples in the treatment of anorexia nervosa.
We really need to work with them together as a couple to come up with their own playbook so that we can have a tailored intervention for each couple.
A major focus: improving communication and listening skills.
Because so often there's a competition to get your point across and what we really want to do is, we want to get the partners listening. And we want to get the patients listening as well.
Counseling also helps a partner know when anorexia's doing the talking.
So the identity of the eating disorder and the person who is suffering from the eating disorder get merged into one. And we really have to ask all the time, is that you talking or is that anorexia talking?
Skills that helped Tom see his wife in a new light.
I learned to be able to separate the disease process from my wife.
And helped unite them against a disease that will always be part of their lives. For WebMD, I'm Sandee Lamotte.
