It was an abnormal PAP smear that's why he did it.
When the results of Lauren Hook's pap test came back abnormal, her gynecologist scheduled her for an additional test called Speculoscopy.
What speculoscopy does is with a special light and with help of acidic acid or vinegar, it actually goes beyond the actual surface of the cervix.
Speculoscopy uses an incandescent blue light called speculite. Once activated, it's attached to a speculum to help illuminate the cervix. With a special lens, the doctor is able to spot abnormal cells beneath the surface.
You can see these abnormal cells that are not picked up with naked eyes and routine white light.
The maker of the test claims that combining routine pap smears with speculoscopy cuts the number of false-negatives in half.
50 percent of the time it could be actually abnormal and it was never picked up.
So you might say, why do annual traditional pap tests?
Because if you have three consecutive normal annual PAP smears, three in a row, then that 50 percent of false negativity goes down to 12.5 percent.
Doctor Im says combining speculoscopy with a traditional pap smear can only improve those odds.
If a PAP smear's normal and Speculite is also normal, then you're pretty sure that it's gonna be a normal cervix.
Lauren's problem turned out to be nothing to worry about. But she'll be back next year just to be sure.
If you get it tested every year and something shows up and they catch it, it's gone, they can get rid of it.
