Understanding Uterine Fibroids -- Symptoms
What Are the Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids?
Often, uterine fibroids have no symptoms. When they do, they may include:
- Heavy, prolonged, or irregular menstrual bleeding
- Pain in the lower abdomen or back
- Painful intercourse
- Urinary problems, such as urinary frequency
- Rectal problems, such as pain in the rectum
Uterine fibroids (leiomyomata) are non-cancerous growths that develop in or just outside a woman’s uterus (womb). Uterine fibroids develop from normal uterus muscle cells that start growing abnormally. As the cells grow, they form a benign tumor.

Call Your Doctor About Fibroids If:
- You feel a sharp or chronic pain, low in your abdomen.
- You feel cramp-like pains, similar to a miscarriage, as if your uterus is trying to rid itself of a fibroid mass. See your doctor without delay to have this fibroid tumor removed.
