Hashimoto's Thyroiditis Directory
Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an inherited thyroid disorder in which the body's immune cells mistakenly attack the thyroid gland. This attack damages thyroid cells and interferes with the gland's ability to produce thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone plays a crucial role in the health of nearly every cell in your body. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is the most common cause of an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) in the United States. It is also the most common type of thyroid disease diagnosed.
