5. When it comes to exercise, no pain, no gain.
You need to make an effort. But you don't need to work out to the point of
exhaustion if your goal is a healthier heart.
For instance, if you walk for an hour at a 4-mile pace, you'll burn about
400 calories. That’s in the same range as running for 30 minutes at a pace of
10 minutes per mile.
Moderate-intensity activity, done regularly, is enough. There is no evidence
that additional intensity buys additional heart health, notes Richard Stein,
MD, national spokesman for the American Heart Association and professor of
medicine and cardiology at NYU School of Medicine.
