I was put on 20 mg a day, and the first month it reduced my total cholesterol by about 125. Soon after, I began to have dizziness, headaches, then a progressively worsening weakness in my legs, and severe cramping of muscles. It was like having near constant charlie horses, with the worst pain in my feet, which seemed to be acting like a closing hand at times. There were times when I couldn't bend over at the store, and a couple of times when I didn't know if I could move without falling. It was like telling my legs to move, but they were refusing to do so. I was also taking meloxicam for arthritis, and I sent a message to my doctor that I thought the meloxicam was causing the problems. I didn't hear anything from him, so I quit the meloxicam but continued with the simvastatin. My condition got worse. Then I just quit taking the simvastatin, and within a few days the problems began to clear up. Every day since, things have gotten better, and I am back on the meloxicam with no side effects. I conclude that it was the simvastatin that caused the problems, and my doctor now seems to agree. I am waiting on new lab tests to see if there's any more need for a statin drug, and possibly go on a time release Niacin instead. I should mention that I took 10 mg Zocor many years ago with no noticeable side effects. I urge anyone who is taking either Zocor or the generic simvastatin to watch for side effects carefully. If you experience the headaches, dizziness, cramping of muscles and weakness in the legs, you have to ask yourself if your quality of life is being enhanced by the drug! Do ask your doctor right away if you can either take a lower dose or some other drug, like niacin.Read More Read Less

I am so thankful for the members who have posted their reviews on Zocor! I thought I was aging well beyond my years from the side effects of this drug. I started with abdominal pain and discomfort after the second day. I called my doctor and he advised to take CO Q10, which I did (200 MG) per day and it worked. That was the first side effect and if it sounds "light" that pain was not. It was a "double over" type pain. Now comes the second and most concerning side effect; fatigue. I am sleeping around 10 hours a day and sometimes I feel like I could sleep 24 hours and still feel tired! I was a very active person, only requiring about 7 hours of sleep per night. Now it is a complete 180 where I am tired all the time. I just went to have my cholesterol levels checked today. Depending on the results will determine if I stay on this drug or not. Unfortunately I am one of those people who naturally produce high cholesterol. If I ate anything more fat and surgar free I would be eating sawdust. Is being on this drug really worth the side effects of statins? Time will tell.Read More Read Less

on Zocor for 1.5 yrs; suddenly started having extreme pain in knees (and eventually other joints). To the point of almost not able to walk. After 2 months of pain / not knowing what was happening, I went off Zocor (on my own, not from Dr.'s advice) and approx 1 week later, knees are great - back to walking / exercising every day. Trying a different statin now.

Side effects started after first dose. Took one month and thought I was going to die from the severe pains in my back, and neck. Also dizziness most of the time. Could not sleep more than a couple of hours a night Would wake up after a couple of hours and was unable to go back to sleep. Got to where if I tried to walk more than a few feet, would start having headaches and what felt like a "brain freeze". I needed something to hold onto, cart or walker. After stopped most of the symptoms left, still have neck and back pain in the evenings when I try to do anything. Hope these leave also.Read More Read Less

When I was in my 50's, I started taking Zocor, 40 mg. I don't remember body aches or side effects, except it didn't bring down my cholesterol. the dosage was then put up to 80 mg. I started hurting in my joints so badly and I was loosing my hair. When the doctor took me off it, my joints stopped hurting and my hair returned to normal. Now a Kidney NP wants to put my 75 yr old husband on Simvastatin 20mg. He has diabetes, high triglycerides, low HDL, alzeheimers, and a host of other problems. He already has trouble with muscle aches and cramps in his legs. I will monitor him daily and write down any side effects. The info said it may take a few weeks to work. Is there anyone who knows of a person already with Kidney Disease who is on this med?Read More Read Less

I take Digoxin for an irregular heartbeat (SVT). Since starting Zocor 1 month ago, I am having more episodes with heartbeat, as well as a pounding chest. I took my last dose of Zocor last night after reading these reviews! I came to this site out of concern; I found it!

Since I've been taking this med, I have NOT been sleeping well. Waking up from STRANGE dreams or just waking up every hour. I didn't take it last night ... and slept the whole night. Contacting my Dr. (very strange for this to be happening)
