I have had terrible painful acne since I was 12 years old. I had tried everything else and nothing worked for more than 2 weeks. I finally tried Accutane for 6 months when I was 24, during the six months that I used it I looked like an angel. I am now 27 and my acne is almost non-existent, I might only get a little pimple once in a while if I fall asleep with my make-up on. Accutane was one of the...

I'm 27 and have been taking this drug for about 2.5 months now. So far so good, no noticeable side effects besides having a super dry face and lips. I'd recommend getting the Cetaphil face moisturizer and please please please get Dr. Dan's CortiBalm. This chapstick is the only thing that will get you through this program with your lips in tact.

ISOTRETINION HAS DANGEROUS AND DAMAGING SIDE EFFECTS!!! Isotretinion is a powerful and dangerous drug! It stunted my 16 year-old son's growth forever. He had moderate acne at age 13 and I made the mistake of letting him go on it as his older four siblings had. But they began at 16-17, not 13. It turns out that 3% of users have "premature closure of growth plates", i.e., STUNTED GROWTH! It's on the side effects list. Our dermatologist said this side effect is rare. It's not so rare as it turns out. 3% is risky. He only took it 3-4 months before we could see the effects of NO GROWTH. My son will be the height, weight and stature he was at 13 for the rest of his life. Look at all the side effects and risks before starting this drug!! If your dermatologist will not admit the 3% risk of stunted growth, they are lying to you. It is in the literature. Our dermatologist readily admitted this after the fact and after diagnosis by an endocrinologist, in order to avoid a lawsuit. Our pediatrician claimed she'd never heard of the side effect before, indicating to me that she was either lying to protect herself or woefully ignorant. I've been on this medication for about two months, so far I've seen a reduction in acne and the bigger cystic zits are starting to reduce in size. I've got a ways to go in it, but am very pleased so far. Only side effects I've had to far are dry eyes and chapped lips, for anyone stuggling with chapped lips...USE COCONUT OIL. It smoothes them instantly!

The hardest part about taking Isotretinoin as a female is the rigorous monthly blood draws for a required pregnancy test. My dermatologist decided to try this medicine because my acne was beginning to scar, which was enough to convince me to look past the extreme possible side effects. Once on birth control, I began taking the medicine near the middle of the summer. I stayed out of the sun, used sunscreen, and wore a big hat. Even though I did get a little sun burnt on vacation, I never had any problems with the medicine. I had extremely oily skin, which the medicine took care of near the end, but it also prevented my face from drying out like it does to others. I had no problems with dry skin, but like my dermatologist warned, I had extremely dry lips.I recommend Eucerin Aquaphor chapstick (no wax chap stick). I started seeing the best results near the third month. I was getting no new pimples and the deep painful ones were disappearing. I have always had a problem with inflammation and that started to recede too. I used CeraVe lotion every night, which I am sure helped to prevent my face from drying out. I suffered none of the possible harsh side effects. The only time I experienced a problem was near the end of my five months. As winter approached, my eczema flared up and I have not been able to control it. However, I have been off of the medicine for two months and I have not seen a pimple. If you have eczema, I would recommend taking this medicine in the spring and summer. My redness and acne marks have noticeably begun to recede, but I can now clearly see where the scars are. I am 18 years old, and I was on isotretinoin for 7 months.(40 mg a day) I've been off it for about 4 months, and my acne has not returned. Obvious side effects that I experienced was the chapped lips, and slight muscle fatigue when I first started. Although the muscle fatigue went away after about a month or two, the chapped lips did not get any better.I was warned of this side effect before I started taking it, but I was still extremely frustrated with it. It made me a little self conscious, and I tried just about every chapstick and lip treatments out there. But other than that, this medication really does work. my skin started to improve just a few weeks after I started, and the acne I struggled with for years is finally gone. My dermatologist didn't really warn me about scaring though. I am now using topical creams to try to treat my acne scars, I have some very deep red scars on both of my cheeks that I'm trying to get rid of. I am however very happy that I went on isotretinoin.Read More Read Less

I have been on this drug for 3 months now. After the second month my skin was looking amazing and I felt super confident. But during the 3rd month I started breaking out really bad again. And it wasn't just small pimples, it was huge under the skin painful ones. I'm hoping it will start showing results soon. If so I'm giving up hope for clear skin. I do occasional get stomach pain. My lips are alwYs chapped and peely. I recomend using coco butter. Seems to work the best on my chapped lips. Aquaphor sucked. I also get headaches a lot. And mood swings. I'm hoping this is all worth it though.Read More Read Less

I took accutane 40mg per day for a few week the first time i tried it during the winter, the side effects where so bad i had to stop, headaches, muscle pain, fatigue, skin rashes, and extreme dry skin. My acne goes from mild to severe depending on various reasons, like weather, food, sweating and stress. I heard it worked wonders on many people so i decided to try it again in the summer a few years later, one month at the same does and i had only mild side effects and my skin cleared up like never before, and stayed clear for almost a year after only a month on it. I am now trying it again for a 3rd tie at the same does for 2 weeks and going to 20mg per day for 4 months. Hope to get longer lastibg resuts this time, get your liver tested its the most important thing, and discontinu use if side effects are unbearable. Read More Read Less

I am a sophomore in High School and dealt with Cystic acne since 5th grade. I started going to a dermatologist (as my mom dealt with cystic acne)the summer before my freshman year of high school. Lets just say between July before freshman year and January during Sophomore I tried a LOT of medications. Accutane (or what ever you want to call it) is last resort so I started it this past January. I am on my 5th month and lets just say its THE ONLY MEDICATION THAT WORKED FOR ME. My skin is almost clear now which I have not been able to say since 4th grade. Lets say the symptoms are annoying though, but it is worth it for clear skin. I get a nosebleed every night, I have an extremely dry mouth, my lips peel non-stop ,my skin is dry all the time, I cant get my eyebrows done or my lip bleached, I also have to wear sunscreen all time even though I(practically) live in the Artic. I have a dermatologist apt every month, along with blood work, and the tedious I-pledge quiz. (Birth Control is OPTIONAL.) It is all worth for clear skin though really and ill be done with it in one month!! GO ON IT IF YOU CANRead More Read Less

This drug changed my daughters life. We struggled with acne and this was an answer to our prayers. She inherited the acne from her father and me. It brought back such pain to both of us watching her go through bad acne. We tried everything - spent thousands of dollars and NOTHING worked. She did not want to go to school - she hid in the bathroom - tons of money on make up. Then we found this drug and our lives changed. ANYONE who is struggling with acne or has a child that is - get on this drug - now - it will change their lives and the lives of everyone in the family - no side effects - just a happy confident child! worked great for minor accne. Tried everything else and didnt work, was on antiobiotics, creams didnt work. Its worth going to the big stuff for acne. Dont waste $ on the other stuff it doesnt work! The only thing I would highly recommend if you are on this is stay out of the sun! If you are even in it for 5min your skin will be beat red and you will develop sores on your lips make sure to put chapstik on if you are going outside and wear a hat if you are gardening or cutting the grass. I developed a face rash worse than accne for laying out in the sun to get a tan,I didnt know at that time if you are taking this medication you should stay out of the sun and trust me it took 3 1/2 weeks to get the rash away with lots of creams and antibibiotics. STAY AWAY FROM THE SUN,TRY THIS IN THE FALL AND WINTER INSTEAD IF YOU ARE A OUTSIDE PERSON.Read More Read Less

I am a 24 year old male. I have had acne since I was 13. I was over it. I began taking accutane in the spring of my 3rd year of college. To put it simply, it changed my life. With only dry skin as my symptoms, it was easy to handle. About 6 months, however, I began to break out just as bad as before. So, I started another round of treatmen for 7 months. It went just as well as before, except that I began to break out again about 6 months later again. I was devastated. Even though my partner thinks I'm beautiful, the acne has just made me such an introvert when I'm innately a really outgoing expressive guy. I am now on my 3rd round on a much higher dosage and I'm experiencing great results. I really hope this time sticks. I do drink occasionally, but it doesn't give me any physical side effects. I am wondering, though, if it could have an effect on the medications affectiveness. We shall see, I suppose. Read More Read Less

I took this medication while i was in high school, my junior year. After going through junior high and some of high school with severe untreatable acne, that effected my self-esteem and confidence a great deal. I am not 4 years out of college and ever since I had taken accutane my skin is flawless. I did not experience any abnormal side effects, just dry skin(which you get with other acne ointments) and minor nose bleeds once or twice. Til this day my mom looks at me and still cannot believe how clear my skin is. I did go monthly to get my Liver functions tested and they were always within normal limits. I am now a nurse and highly reccomend this medication for anyone who has tried everything else for their acne without positive results. If side effects for you become to severe, like any medication, consult your doctor and consider discontinuing this medicate. All i can say is that accutane changed my life and I dont know how any can experience depression from this drug when it was curing my reason for low self-esteem, depression. Best of luck to anyone who decides using this drug!Read More Read Less

I was on this for 6 months. While I was on it, I had continual dry lips and skin and constant bloody noses. I burnt if I was in the sun for even 5 minutes. The first two months my acne was the worst is has ever been, but it was worth putting up with all of these side effects. I have now been off of it for 2 years and this medicine has changed my life! I don't have anymore acne!!!! I still have bloody noses, even after having my nose cauterized-- It's annoying but it was worth it for not having acne. Other than that, my hair is now curly, it was straight before I started this medicine. If you're thinking about it, it is a committment to go through the side effects, but keep your end goal in mind and you can do it. To not have acne anymore has changed my life and I am so happy I took this medication.Read More Read Less
