I have a history of diverticulosis. Twice now when food got trapped in the intestine pockets, I have been prescribed Lactulose. When I asked how this worked so quickly to eliminate my pain, the doctor explained this medication acts as a magnet to enter the pockets and then eliminates the rotting food particles trapped in there. It creates moisture and sends it on its way thru the intestines where...
MY DOCTOR HAS PRESCRIBED THIS FOR APPROXIMATELY 8 YEARS! I HAD TO INCREASE AND INCREASE THE DOSAGE FOR IT TO WORK, SO NOW I HAVE TO TAKE THE STRONGER LINZESS WITH IT. IT DOES GIVE ONE GAS. I ALWAYS THOUGHT CONTINUED USE OF A LAXATIVE WAS BAD FOR US? WHY DOES MY DR. KEEP ME ON IT FOR SO LONG? BECAUSE I'D NEVER GO WITHOUT IT (I HAVE A TWISTED COLON) AND NOW I THINK I HAVE A BLOCKAGE…….BELLY...

My father has been on lactulose for over 4 years as treatment for hepatic encephalopathy - the medication works as long as the doses are adjusted properly however recently he's begun to experience some nausea when we've increased his doses...all in all this medicine does what its makers claim it will do - patients just have to be careful with the dosing.

I have stage 3, grade 3, hep C. Also a tumor on my liver and Crohn's disease. The lactulose definetly helped with my bowels, as I have no peristalsis movement and it also helped with the build-up of gasses in my body. I have started noticing and feeling the confusion caused by hep c because of the build up of ammonia in the bloodstream, which can cause encephalitis and death. I am sure the lactulose will give me good results mental health wise. I have a very hard time taking this med. It is a syrup and it takes HORRIBLE. So far I have had the orange and purple syrup -the purple is better tasting-1 to 2 Tbs. daily. A serious problem is that one doesn't know when it is going to do its' job, so can one go outside or must one stay inside to wait. You DON'T want to be caught outside when the feeling comes on. If you can get on with the taste, lactulose is a good thing.Read More Read Less

I understand the difficulty with this treatment. However, when you are really affected by buildup of ammonia, and all of the negatives that go with it, this is the absolute answer in my opinion.

Although I don't like the diareha I can manage it better with diet. It's doing the job and overall I feel so much better. Like any drug routine it does tell me when I am doing it wrong.

I have tried EVERYTHING from Women's Correctal to fiber drinks and every other type of pills and liquids they make and NOTHING works better for me than this. I have a hard time drinking it in juice or straight since it is so thick so I use it as the sweetener in my cup of hot tea and you don't even notice it then. As far as cramps and gas go ... I had a lot of both with the other laxitives but none that I have noticed with this. It is WONDERFUL TO BE REGULAR.

I had to take the medicine 2 days in a row before anything happened and when I finally had a BM I woke up with terrible cramping and then diarrhea. So I decided to not take it the next night and no BM so I took it again 2 days in a row and the same thing happened. Now I have not taken it in several days and have not had a BM either but continue to feel like I have to go. I have had some mucus like BM's but nothing to write home about and after the urgency goes away and the very small amount is out I still feel like I have to go...Read More Read Less

I like many tried all sorts of remedies, I found Lactulose works great. Yea, it tastes awful but I mix it with a little OJ and down it goes, I also only take it once a day,3tsp. I have some cotton mouth, gas but not bad, before I was constipated for days to a week, that was much worse!!

This medication gives me terrible diarhea. Is there an alternative to help with liver function that wouldn't have the same effect on "emptying" the colon?

If you can tolerate the side effects of which the main one is now chronic diarrhea, My ammonia levels have come down from the highest documented level of 118 my last blood test indicated my ammonia level at 72. I've been taking it three times a day for two and a half months now and I have noticed that episodes from elevated ammonia are now somewhat milder and less frequent. Dr. has now added Flagyl(an antibiotic) and a low protein diet. Fingers are crossed, I hope this will help as well :)

drug is easy to take,if you mix it with a small glass of juice. The one Major drawback is that when it starts to work you better be very close to a toilet or you will have to take a shower.

I love this stuff. I have had 2-3 BM everyday since the 3rd day I started using it which was 3 months ago. I use it in combination with Amitiza and it works great. I have tried drinking so many weird things from fiber to mirilax to mineral oil to vinegar to prune juice and I must say compared to those things the Lactulose goes down much easier. It tastes like Karo syurp. It is very inexpensive compared to laxatives and fiber stuff. I get 2 liters for 10.00 and it lasts a little over a month. I work at a doctors office and I have highly recommended this to our doctors to prescribe their patients. Read More Read Less
