I have been on Depo for over ten years. I just had a BMD test and I am borderline Osteopenia. Hopefully we can stop osteoporosis before it develops. Please read your leaflets and stay on top of your medical care.

I have bled every. single. day for the time I've been on this medication. My doctor insisted that the second shot would clear up the bleeding and then gave me the same answer for the third. I've now done three shots, and have bled the entire time. I'm refusing any further doses.

I've been on the shot for almost two years now. It was a easy decision since i could never stay on track with the pills and wont use a IUD. I was fine for the first year, no bleeding but a bit of spotting when i got the first shot (on queue with my period) but then nothing. But come the first year mark, i suddenly noticed everything going downhill, horrible mood swings, ill be happy, then angry, then sad. I noticed a serious decrease in my mental health. My depression which was manageable until September this year, became almost uncontrollable. I use to be a anxiety free, college student managing depression pretty well considering everything. Now i have severe anxiety, unable to think straight or figure anything out. I often notice i get completely lost, can't think, i'm forgetting things i heard 5 seconds ago. Then started the bleeding, 2 full weeks of unusual on and off bleeding, ranging from bright red, to brown and then black, what the hell?.. , went to the doctor and he said it was usual.. that it wasnt a issue, It stopped and haven't had it again until recently the bleeding started again, suddenly im gushing blood again and this is nothing like the first time, i'm passing golf ball sized blood clots with no other blood with it. They range from a tiny blood clot to huge ones and i've never had a problem with blood blots before. Depo provera has caused be severe depression and anxiety, mood swings, horrible chest pain. Pain that has continued for almost a year now. Unexplained but excruciating, unable to breath or move at all because of it. This is a horrible birth control, but at 20, it is the most dependable one (as said by my doctor). My doctor pushing all side effects i get from this birth control off as nothing. All sites on the internet say to go to the doctor and get medical attention for immediately for most of these side effects but he says i'm just fine.. Seriously. Take this drug of the market and stop giving it to women. It is HORRIBLE.Read More Read Less

I've been on the depo shot for almost 5 yrs now and never had any of the "bad" side effects. If you consider not having your period for almost 5 yrs bad then I had one of the listed side effects. It's the only medication that has actually worked for my PCOS and I'm going to stay on it for as long as I can. Wouldn't change a thing!

It has been 3 months since my Depo shot. The worst 3 months of my life. Every single side effect you could have i have gotten it. I cant imagine what it has done to my body now. I never had pimples in my life until now, gained 5 lbs in the first 2 months, i had to pull myself together from these insane mood swings, my eczema came back from when i was a little girl, the headaches and ringing in my ears will not go away, its hard to "want" sex,it makes you extremely dry, spotting last for 2 weeks at a time, i am constantly constipated. before the shot i was a normal healthy person,im also experiencing extreme anxiety and the depression got better but your body and mind will not be the same on Depo Provera. I really wish they would warn you about how severe the side effects can be especially to a woman with no issues before like myself. I just want my body to be back to normal, i dont care about how "easy" the shot is to take every 3 months because the side effects are not worth it. TRUST ME. I just pray my body returns back to normal. BTW i am only 21 years old... Read More Read Less

i have been on the depo shot for over two years. the first 6 months i experienced heavy bleeding. i have gotten the worst migranes, i have gained over 20 pounds, i now have high blood pressure, high heart rate and low sex drive. the only good to the depo shot is not having to remember to take it everyday. i am now switching to the cryselle pills.

Im looking through alot of these reviews myself and they really match my problem areas. Depression, ugh my poor boyfriend, the mood swings are unreal. I'm not a emotional female in the slightest and it turns me into a 14 year old on their first period. If it does that to me, I can't imagine what it would do to a naturally emotional female. It stopped my period pains, thats really the only plus. It stopped my actual period for about a month and a half, but ever since I've been spotting like hell and now I'm having my period for the second week. I've only had 1 shot and I haven't been very satisfied. I've gained 10lbs which I reckon isn't too bad considering it only brought me to a healthy 110lbs but to any woman with a thicker physique, probably wouldn't enjoy the weight gain. Oh and not to mention the fact that I'm 18 and this shot has drained my energy to the point of me having the energy level of a 45 year old. I wouldn't reccomend it but everyone is different.Read More Read Less

I had two injections of Depo merely to cover me while I was getting my tubes tied. During the entire time, I have had mood swings, depression headaches and consistent bleeding. I don't get a period yet I bleed every day. Not enough for a pad or tampon. If I have sex I bleed more. My doctor has gone through scrapings and testing of the unterine lining only for it to come back pointing to high levels of progesterone from the Depovera. My tubes are tied now and I am waiting for the effects of the Depo to wear off. HORRIBLE experience! This should not be available for anyone!Read More Read Less

Depo is a terrible drug. Every single side effect one can experience has plagued me. I never had issues with blood pressure, fluid retention, heart rate, migraines, fatigue, etc before starting depo. Now I have severe issues with all of these things and no doctor is willing to accept that it is depo causing these issue. Doctor's are paid to endorse whatever poision the FDA approves. The FDA does not care about patients, they care about their profits. Reporting adverse reactions to the FDA is a waste of time because they truly do not care. It is 2014 and with all the advancements to technology you would think our medicines would be safer and better tolerated with fewer side effects, but that's not the case, interesting. I would not recommend depo to any person EVER! It is absolutely horrible and takes months to years to clear your system and even then no guarantees about permanent damage can be made. I wish I had never taken this shot, I just want my old life back. I am only 24 years old and feel as if I am 74Read More Read Less

Got my first Depo shot this May (2014) and I'm completely satisfied. I've had irregular periods all my life, mostly because I'm stressed all the time I'm sure, but after my first shot, I maybe had like 3 random spotting days and then I never gotten my period since! Getting my next shot this week and just relieved that I don't have to remember to take a pill every single day, that's why I chose the shot. I've never had sex so I'm not sure how effective it really is as birth control, just wanted to get on before college - just in case. Heard lots of horror stories, but I have had no side effects thus far - aside from the no periods, which I can't complain about one bit! Read More Read Less

I've been on DP for about 10 years now. Had a few spotting episodes when I got over-stressed or if waited too long for my next injection. Sex drive normal, bone density normal, etc. Recommend to at least try to all women; hope your experience is as easy and smooth as mine.

Depo Provera did it's job because I never got pregnant. However I was basically on my period for two years. It was a constant bleed it was about once or twice a day I'd bleed for like five minutes but it was even to much for a tampon. During intercourse I always bleed a lot. And then I started having involuntary vaginal muscle flexing.

The main reason I got on the depo was that I had aura migraines from the pill, have terrible periods, and my dr said this would be good for me. Over the 2 1/2 years I was on the depo, I got depressed, lost my sex drive, severe acne, stomach issues, allergies, fatigue...the list goes on. My dr kept saying this was all in my head, and I already had these conditions before the depo. What a load of crap and I believed it. Do not take this drug. It is poison and should be taken off the market!

I started taking this medication because birth control pills make me ill. I have been on it for 7 or more years (I can't really remember). I have no problems expect for weight gain and it messing with my blood sugar numbers. In November 2013, I had breakthrough bleeding that lasted 2 1/2 months. I even went in to see my NP for my yearly and shot which didn't help anything--still bled. She suggested I go see her MD. Right before my appt I stopped bleeding. She suggested a uterine ablation because the Depo may not help me anymore. I just had that done and am due for my next shot which I am not getting. I have PCOS--this is why I have always had horendous periods. We will see if I still need to be on this in a couple of months. I was pleased with the Depo shot but am going to look forward to not having to get poked every 3 months. This drug was a Godsend for me. It may not be for you. By the way I am 47 and have no intention of having any more kids.Read More Read Less

I've been on depo for about 2 years now. My periods lightened up almost immediately after my first shot, and although they were lighter, they lasted longer (2-3 weeks of extremely light flow). This continued until my third shot, and since then I haven't gotten my period or spotting once! There are pros and cons to this contraceptive, and it's different for everybody. The first year I was on it, I was working out very hard and lost probably 10 lbs from weighing 135. I have continued working out, but periodically and haven't been pushing as hard and have gained 20 lbs from that first year. I now weigh 145, and although I haven't been working as hard, I think the extra 10 lbs was due to the shot. The shot has also made me more emotional. It's not extreme, but every once in a while, the smallest little things will make me cry. Other than these two things, I have been very happy with my birth control. My skin has been clear my whole life, and the shot has had no effect on that and my hair is thick as ever. I do feel very tired all the time, but I'm almost positive I felt that way before getting on depo. I do recommend this birth control, but as I said, it's different for everyone. Oh, and another slight con is that the injection sight is usually a little sore for a day or two afterward. I usually get it in my buttock, but for a few shots I got it in my arm, and I do not recommend that sight. My arms would be so sore I couldn't sleep on that side. The soreness in my buttock doesn't really bother me because it is only slight.Read More Read Less

I started taking the Depo Shot July 2013. My first two months were an emotional hell but my moods seemed to even out after month two so I decided to continue the shot. There have been many changes with my body and personality that I have noticed since taking the shot. I have put on about 5-10 lbs (which isn't a bad thing since I'm slim anyways, but it makes me very uncomfortable), my sex drive has decrease and when I do have sex my vagina doesn't produce the lubrication it used to, its basically dried me up. Then this past month i have started having terrible cramps but no periods. Normally when I have my period I experience terrible cramps but since starting the depo shot I haven't had a period. I just got my next round of shot yesterday and I had mentioned the cramps to the nurse who said that cramping like that wasn't normal; so then i mentioned it to my doctor and he just says "every woman gets cramps" and then walks out. My doctor is an idiot anyways. I feel sick every day & get headaches multiple times a week. Since getting my new shot yesterday I have constantly felt sick and exhausted. The past few months Ive also noticed a decline in my happiness, a decrease in wanting to be social, and Im always feeling tired. Oh! and Ive also had some unwanted hair growth that my boyfriend and i noticed.... i now have to trim my nose hairs and the hair on my upper lip has started to darken. Disgusting. Never had to deal with anything like this before. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. Its not worth putting your body through this. Id much rather go back on the pill and deal with my excruciating cramps on my period than continue to be on this shot. Yesterday was my last one, and that was a mistake...I will never get the Depo Shot again.Read More Read Less

I was prescribed depo at 21 yrs old for severe endometriosis. I had to have several laparoscopic surgeries for it and was even put on Lupron, which put me into a menopausal state. The depo was great because not only did it relieve my of the endometriosis, NO MORE PERIODS! At 21, not having to worry about periods or unwanted pregnancies, Depo was like being part of a secret club. My periods before Depo really weren't anything. 5-7 days reg to heavy, never spotting in between. After 11 years, I decided that I wanted to give my body a break from any medications and just stopped. I really didn't notice any change via weight or moods. I slowly started my periods about 8 months later, first by spotting for a day or two then a little heavier for 2-5 days. That was going on for about 2 years. Then, around this time last year I was in Hawaii on vacation. The day after I arrived I started my period. I always use super tampons and the day I started, I went throw a super plus every hour. I was in a rental car with my husband and his business partner on our way to a dinner meeting and I bled through a super plus tampax while on our 30 min car ride, and bled onto the rental car seat. Couldn't get out of car I was so mortified. Heavy bleeding with crazy sized clots continued for the 5 days we were there. It has been like this every month since. Half dollar sized clots and multiple boxes of Tampax. My new doctor said most do not stay on depo for as long as I did and the few long term studies show it can cause crazy problems. Having known what I know now, I think I would have thought twice before I continued to take it as long as I did. It's like every period I get now is making up for all the ones I missed. I was very satisfied with the depo and was on it for years, having no periods. BUT I have NOT had a sex drive for quite some time and never knew why... well I have been OFF the depo for over a year now... and my sex drive is back... I will not take this depo again unless is my only option... checking into IUD today actually being that I need to get back on something since my drive is back. I didn't have any side effects that I am aware of and I actually loved the depo.. but putting 2 & 2 together... sex drive loss is the ONLY side affect I can think of that I had. Read More Read Less
