Do Colon Cleansers Work?

The colon doesn't need to be "cleansed," and even if it did, herbal pills probably wouldn't do it.

Question:

I have been feeling "bogged down" lately and think that maybe a colon cleansing would help. I have found cleansing pills and would like to try them. The pills contain fennel seed, peppermint, papaya, rose hips, buckthorn bark, barberry root, and acidophilus. Will taking these colon cleansing pills make me feel better? Can I keep up my normal daily activities, or will I have to stay close to a restroom?

Answer:

I am not a believer in these kinds of products. The colon does not need "cleansing." Even if it did, there is no proof that this product would actually cleanse it. Your best bet is to eat a diet that is high in fiber and drink a lot of water. If you still want to try it, I suggest you stay near a bathroom in case it has a laxative effect.
